Introduction :
Swan is a State-of-the-Art designed active filter design, which improves power quality in the electrical power supply. With Swan the reliability of the installation increases and better control over the power flow in electrical transmission systems is achieved. This boosts up the profitability for both electrical supply authorities and industrial end users.

With more and more automation happening in the manufacturing processes, electricity consumers are becoming more aware of the consequences due to harmonics and poor power factor on their power supply.
A spurious tripping of the switchgear due to power pollution (harmonic pollution) in the supply can stop an entire production line in sensitive industries such as continuous process manufacturing, printing and textiles. Meanwhile utilities are facing the challenges of maintaining voltage and VAr support as non-linear loads are increasing and T&D capacity becomes more constrained.
Swan - Digital Active Power Conditioner, developed by DB Power Electronics (P) Ltd. is useful for both end users and suppliers. Fqr an electric power consumer, optimization of an existing power system increases the productivity, decreases utility charges, and improves equipment reliability.
Dynamic VAr Compensation
The power flow on the supply line consists of both active and reactive power. The difference between active and reactive power is due to the fact that the current wave always leads or lags (depending on capacitive or inductive load) the voltage wave.
Swan monitors line voltage & current and instantaneously calculates the needed leading or lagging. PF changes in the transmission lines are sensed and proportionately feed to the high speed IGBT device and the controller adds reactive power to the lines as per the requirement.

Operating Principle :
Swan uses latest technology to eliminate harmonics injected into the mains supply by non-linear loads. as well supplies inductive power demanded by the load so as to correct input power factor to near unity.
Current harmonic elimination is achieved by sensing load current and extracting harmonic current signal. This and ,the reactive current signal together are used to generate a reference for the controlled current source connected at the PCC (:point of Common Connection) of source and load. This results in the mains supplying only real power for the load and reactive and harmonics being sourced from the Swan. This is carried out dynamically. so that a change in the load pattern or its nature is immediately responded to, without any manual intervention.In this example first Figure shows the recorded input current waveform of a 6 pulse thyristorised rectifier.
Bottom Figures shows considerable improvement in the waveform with Swan connected with harmonic correction and with both power factor & harmonic correction.
